Juvenile Laced Woodpecker

In August 2009, we posted the Laced Woodpecker (Picus vittatus) feeding a pair of chicks in the nest. Since then, the chicks have fledged.

According to Mark G, the juveniles had just fledged and not too steady in perching, felling off a few times. Most of the time they were preening themselves. This was on 7th October 2009.

The red crown of the juvenile male in the images above is just developing, with the back still black. Flight feathers have all been developed although tail feathers do not appear to be fully developed.
