Yellow-vented Bulbul fledglings

The Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier) is such a common birds that birdwatchers simply do not see it. Similarly, photographers ignore it for more exotic and colourful species. But not Howard Banwell. He photographed a pair of fledglings showing them in their various comfort behaviours at Loyang Valley in Singapore (above left). These include allopreening (above right) and wing stretching (below left).
As with all fledglings, they were hungry all the time and crying loudly to be fed (below right). Note that the buccal cavity is prominently red and lined with yellow flanges, the better to attract the attention of the adults arriving with food… see these earlier posts: 1, 2, 3 and 4.
According to Howard, “Common birds, but so much pleasure watching this pair of fledgling Yellow-vented Bulbuls who appeared in a tree just off my terrace last week.
“I suspect they had left the nest that morning, otherwise a day or two before. A parent flew in a couple of times to keep an eye on them. They were finally spooked when a couple of other adults seemed to fly in with a flurry of feathers - I wonder if these were protecting their own nesting area?”
