It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Koh Rim Poh, known to his photographer friends as remo. His field buddies at Nature Pixels are already missing him.
Dr Koh has been an ardent supporter of the photographic e-forum www.naturepixels.org and is one of a growing band of bird photographers who have made significant contributions to the study of bird behaviour.
The 1990s saw a slow decline in serious birdwatching as most local birdwatcher became obsessed with twitching, listing and ticking – activities involving just looking at birds but not studying them.
The sudden influx of digital bird photographers in the early 2000s and their excellent images of birds – portraits as well as images of bird behaviour - has no doubt jolted traditional birdwatchers from their complacency. Now, birdwatchers are actively courting bird photographers and are trying to work closely with them, all for the betterment of ornithology.
His last few contributions include his study of the Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus) that just caught a bee.
We at BESG convey our deepest condolence to his family.
